Opportunities Available:

  • Leadership Opportunities

  • This year, SGUO will be offering leadership roles outside of the board. This will give members more direct access to get involved with the Institute of Society and Genetics. There will be different committees to both execute the goals of the year and appeal to your individual skillsets! If applying to become a part of the HBS major, Society and Genetics minor, the SGUO Board next year, or just to gain some resume experience is something you would like to accomplish, this would be a great option to get involved!

  • Networking/Community Opportunities

  • The Institute of Society and Genetics is an opportunity for individuals to explore medicine and public health in interdisciplinary ways, with the incorporation of law, public policy, ethics, and environmentalism. With these new ways of looking at the world, comes new opportunities to look at different careers. Our goal is to reach out to past alumni and professionals in interdisciplinary careers to raise awareness and connect members with new opportunities. We will also have career panels and will be searching for volunteer organizations to connect our members with!

  • Social Opportunities

  • Before anything we want to make the Institute of Society and Genetics and SGUO members feel like they are having an intimate, “private school” experience in the #1 Public School in the U.S.! With that being said, we will be having SGUO social events and opportunities for members to make friends in this small department. Additionally, we will be setting up a mentor/mentee program between HBS underclassmen and upperclassmen!

Logistics:

  • Time Commitment-

  • SGUO is an organization where you can be as involved as you wish. The time commitment will range from attending events of the quarter to having an active leadership role. However, general body members are required to attend at least 9 events (meeting or event) in the academic school year. Active members (details on website) in the HBS major will receive a graduation cord.

  • Meeting/Event times- The structure of the organization is to have a meeting one week followed by an event the following week. Committee leaders will be attending meetings Wednesday nights from 6-7:50 in MathSci 7608 once every two weeks. General committee members will be expected to attend events on the Wednesdays on which they are held, and to also contribute to the club outside of meetings through the guidance of their committee leader. General body members are expected to attend events. All events as of this moment will be held on Wednesday nights from 6-7:50. We will let you know if anything changes!

Our website and emails will update specific dates and details for events to come! We look forward to hearing from you, and to begin a productive, eventful, and zesty year! Best, The SGUO
